About Us

HearSay Speech & Hearing Centre is a family run speech-language pathology and audiology facility owned by Yvonne and Rui Oliveira. They reside in the town of Milton where they are parents of 3 beautiful daughters, Jasmine, Maya, and Chloe.

Yvonne M. Oliveira
is a dually certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Audiologist. Having completed her undergraduate degree in the areas of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at California State University, Chico she then proceeded to complete both the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Masters degrees concurrently at the University of Western Ontario where she graduated in 1998 (SLP) and 1999 (Aud.). She spent a number of years working in the educational setting within a specialized hearing impaired program which facilitated the use of Auditory-Verbal therapy, and is a certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist (Cert. AVT) and works in conjunction with VOICE for Hearing Impaired Children, Halton/Peel Chapter where she works on speech, language and listening goals with hearing impaired children and adults. She is involved in mentoring Teachers of the Deaf in the philosophies of auditory verbal therapy across the Halton and Peel district school boards.

Yvonne teaches college level audiology courses for the Communicative Disorders Program at Durham College in Oshawa.  She provides assessment and therapy in the areas of articulation, apraxia, oral motor disorders, language, Pervasive Developmental Disorders such as autism, global delay, mutism, and literacy.  She has specific training in areas of early language where she has Hanen Certification  for "It Takes Two to Talk," and holds PROMPT (PROMPTs for Restructuring Oral Musculature Phonetic Targets) Level 1 Certification, as well as being trained in the use of Phoneme Touch and Say.

Rui M. Oliveira
is a certified Audiologist and completed his Master of Clinical Science degree at the University of Western Ontario. Rui provides hearing assessments, hearing aid evaluations, and re-checks, as well as fittings, individual counseling, and earmold impressions. Rui can both prescribe and dispense hearing aids in accordance with the practice guidelines set out by the Canadian Audiology and Speech Language Pathology Association of Ontario (CASLPO).  He is certified through the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA).

Rui works in conjunction with Dr. Aimee Mabini, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist in the Halton region where he provides testing and counselling to children through to adults.  Rui's clinical philosophy is one of individualized care and attention with a personal touch for all clients who seek care at the HearSay Speech & Hearing Centre. When you or your loved one enters our office, each staff member is trained to treat you with respect, and to give you and your family the professional attention needed to address your hearing health care needs.

Nancy N. Oliveira
received an Honours Bachelor of Health Sciences degree, from University of Western Ontario in 2002. She then went on to receive her Masters of Health Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Toronto in 2005. She is registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO), as well as being a member of CASLPA (Canadian Association of Speech Language Pathologist and Audiologists).

Nancy is also currently employed with The Scarborough General Hospital in Scarborough, where she provides speech therapy for children with a variety of communicative challenges.  She has experience working with school-aged and adult populations in the areas of speech and language development, articulation/phonology, stuttering and voice disorders. She has specific training in the Lidcombe program and the Comprehensive Stuttering program approaches to stuttering, she is Hanen certified for "It Takes Two to Talk", she holds PROMPT (Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) level I certification, and has experience with PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System). Nancy has been working as a Speech-Language Pathologist at HearSay since it first opened in the Milton community in 2005.

Julie Schoonings                                                               
Julie Schoonings received a Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in 
Speech Language   Sciences from Brock University in 2007. She then went on to receive her Masters of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from Central Michigan University in 2009. She is registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO), as well as the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Julie is currently employed with Niagara Health System where her responsibilities include; the assessment and remediation of adults who are experiencing difficulties with speech, language and swallowing skills. Julie has experience working with pre-school; school aged children and adults in the areas of speech and language development, articulation, phonology, cognition, voice disorders and swallowing. Julie is very happy to join the HearSay team.

Krista Matysek 
Krista Matysek is a Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) who graduated from Georgian College in 2007. Her interest in speech and language developed during her Honours Bachelor of Sport and Physical Education degree while attending Laurentian University. Krista has experience working with children on a variety of speech and language goals, including: articulation, literacy and language. Krista enjoys working with children and young adults both individually and in small groups. Krista has recently moved to the Burlington area and is enjoying meeting all of her new clients. Krista is very happy and excited to become a part of the HearSay team.    

Monica Lamb                                                                                   
Monica is a
Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) who
graduated from Durham College. She comes to the HearSay team
as a former Elementary School teacher with experience in both  the mainstream and special education classrooms. It was here that she developed an interest in speech and language therapy, aural rehabilitation and early intervention. Monica has experience working with preschool and school-aged populations in the areas of speech and language development, articulation/phonology, social skills, literacy and aural rehabilitation. Monica thoroughly enjoys working with children of all ages both individually and in small groups as well as working with families in parent-child language training. She is a member of CASLPA (Canadian Association of Speech Language Pathologist and Audiologists) and OCT (Ontario College of Teachers). She is very excited to be a part of the HearSay team.

 Karen Barcomb
is the HearSay Office Administrator and has had several years of experience in working in health-related professions. Originally from Montreal, Quebec, she moved to Milton over 24 years ago with her husband and has two grown children. Karen is a critical member of the HearSay team and is responsible for conducting the day to day office management as well as being a helpful and friendly face to service the needs of our clientele.
